The Story Unfolds: Origins and Evolution
"Never search too deeply into the game's files: some information is perhaps better left hidden." - The URL
The story of Dataclysm begins in a basement, within an abandoned computer, where an unfinished game is left behind until an inexplicable event has awakened forgotten lines of code and given them consciousness. This convergence gave rise to diverse archetypes that quickly adapted to "life" on the Motherboard: mysterious SANDBAGS, ARMORER guardians, enigmatic MAGICIAN scholars, tribal RANGER adventurers, majestic DRAGONS, carefree UNDEAD, and many more.
The lore of Dataclysm is explored through individual cards, each ready to tell its own story through the descriptions that players can read in-game via the almanac.
Gameplay Overview
In Dataclysm, players will take on the role of skilled commanders tasked with leading their troops into battle to defeat enemy armies and ultimately the leader commanding those forces. Your objective: reduce your opponent’s HP to 0 by attacking them directly with the troops you control.
Just like in a real war scenario, in Dataclysm there is no impartial resource system. Instead, the resources available to the player are their own troops. During their turn, each player can deploy up to two basic troops in the 8 slots on their side of the battlefield, and then send them into battle.
To access more powerful units, there are two possibilities:
Update Units: Players can Update a troop on their battlefield by playing an updated version from their hand (provided that the troop on the field shares the specified characteristics on the card held in hand). Updated troops are significantly more powerful than regular ones and are crucial for securing victory. However, players can only update up to one troop per turn.
Summon Ritual Units: If players have specific resources available, they can summon a powerful Ritual troop from their hand. As the name suggests, these incredible units require a variable sacrifice, varying from card to card, to enter the battlefield. The arrival of one of these beasts on the field often foretells defeat for the opponent.
To support their army, there are three other types of cards that players can add to their deck:
Methods: These cards activate an instant effect. They can serve various functions, from allowing the player to draw cards to dealing damage to all troops on the field. Only one Method can be played per turn.
Cheats: Similar to Methods, but the effect described on the card always requires a specific target that must be present in one of the game zones. The possible effects are highly versatile, ranging from dealing damage to a troop on the field to retrieving a card from the discard pile. Only one Cheat can be played per turn.
Settings: These cards introduce a new global rule that applies to both players. Only one Settings card can be active on the field at any time, and each time a player plays one, the previous Settings card is discarded.
